National Dog Week – We Love Disney Dogs!

In recognition of National Dog Week, we’d like to pay homage to some of our favorite dogs this week……Disney Dogs! From the lovable animated dogs of so many classic Disney films, to the devoted and protective dogs of some of Disney’s popular live-action films, dogs have stolen the spotlight in many a Disney story! When you stop and think about it, there really are so many dog characters that we’ve come to love over the years. But that’s not really surprising since Walt Disney himself was such an animal lover.

Dogs have had a starring role in some of our most beloved Disney films over the years. And everyone probably has a different favorite dog film or even dog character that comes to mind. Some of those movies have revolved around dogs as the main characters, like my personal favorite dog movie, Disney’s 1961 animated classic, 101 Dalmatians. Then there’s also the 1996 live-action remake of the film, starring Glenn Close as the villainous Cruella De Vil, with all those adorable dalmatian puppies that were such a hit with audiences that Disney had to make a live-action sequel, 102 Dalmatians. I just love those little spotted dogs, whether they be animated or not!

But there are so many quirky and unique Disney dog characters to love, and one of the most unique ones has to be none other than Slinky Dog from the Disney-Pixar Toy Story movies. Slinky Dog is Sheriff Woody’s loyal friend, even when the other toys turn against him. Who wouldn’t love a dog with a slinky body?!? I remember the first time we saw Toy Story in theaters and I had to have me a Slinky Dog toy when all the merchandise hit stores.

Another unique dog that comes courtesy of Pixar films is Dug from the popular film Up. Dug is the exuberant and lovable dog that befriends Mr. Fredricksen and Russell in Paradise Falls. What makes Dug so unique? Well, the collar he wears translates his every thought to speech, from his dislike for “the cone of shame” to his immediate adoration for Mr. Fredricksen. Dug is also the first Disney dog to be awarded the “Palm Dog Award” by the British film critics as the best canine performance at Cannes Film Festival in 2009. Definitely one top dog!

Percy the pug

There are also a number of dogs in Disney films that have big character even though they play small parts, so they don’t always receive a lot of recognition. The first one that comes to mind is the spoiled rotten little pug, Percy, in the animated film Pocahontas. Although Percy starts out as the antagonistic pet of Governor Ratcliffe, he soon sees the error of his ways and befriends both Pocahontas and Meeko. Another dog that plays a very minor role, but always makes me smile when I watch the animated film Mulan, is Mulan’s adorably rambunctious dog, Little Brother. While Little Brother is only seen briefly in both Mulan and Mulan II, his frenetic energy provides a bit of humor to Mulan’s distress.

There are so many Disney Dogs that I could go on and on, but these are just a few that we love. So who are some of your favorite Disney Dogs? Check back with us all week as we spotlight some of Disney’s most popular dog characters.
