Disney Traveling Around the “World” – Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Part 6 – Pixar Place

Welcome back “World” travelers! I hope you had a great experience over at the Animation Courtyard. Today we’re headed to the smallest area at the Studios, Pixar Place. It may be small but it carries a big punch, so let’s check it out!

Pixar Place is the newest section of Disney Hollywood Studios theme park. Opening in May of 2008, this area took over many of the original soundstages that were used when the park hosted actual production facilities. Pixar Place is themed after the Pixar Animation Studios campus in Emeryville, California. Its sole attraction is Toy Story Midway Mania!, an interactive 4D attraction hosted by the characters of the Toy Story film series, inspired by classic carnival midway games. This is also the only themed land in the park without any shops due to its small size, with only one main attraction and one dining place.

Toy Story Midway Mania! – This is one of the most popular attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and one that you will not want to miss.

Toy Story Midway Mania! is one of the most technologically sophisticated attractions developed by Walt Disney Imagineering, costing an estimated $80 million to design and build.

Toy Story Midway Mania is a family attraction that allows guests to use toy cannons to shoot objects via a 3D projection in a series of midway carnival games.

Inside the Toy Story Midway Mania queue, you’ll find yourself shrunk down to the size of a toy soldier surrounded by a cavalcade of classic toys and games. Older guests will identify them from their own youth, while younger guests will recognize many brands that still exist today, such as Candy Land, Barrel of Monkeys, Battleship and Chutes & Ladders.

The highlight of the queue is an interactive Mr. Potato Head audio-animatronic that can sing, talk and move much of his body, and perform some very amazing feats unseen by other audio animatronics to date.

The actual ride puts guests into ride vehicles that swiftly move guests in front of giant screens where you put on 3D glasses and use your cannons to shoot targets on the screen. Gameplay was designed by Disney Imagineers to cater to the skill level of anyone, and guests who aren’t adept at video games will find the game adjusting to their skill level while advanced gamers (or at least those who re-ride quite a bit) will find the game becoming a bit more difficult. Toy Story Midway Mania begins with a training game (worth no points) and is meant to acclimate guests to how the game works. Very quickly, guests are whisked off to play a series of four games that feature different Toy Story characters coupled with different game types such as ring toss, dart throws, baseballs and even egg toss. After each game, guests can track their overall score on their onboard screen, their score for the round they just completed and their accuracy level. The game is more than just shooting targets, as some targets trigger special effects (such as water being sprayed at the guests or wind being blow) as well as including secret targets that create big point opportunities. And thrown into the mix are some fun Toy Story film references.

Toy Story Midway Mania’s goal is to provide a family attraction that everyone can ride and will leave guests wanting ride to over and over. And most guests will agree that the attraction succeeds in this goal. One of the most common responses of guests who ride for the first time is for them to want to ride it again. Toy Story Midway Mania is a wildly addictive game that really appeals to everyone in the family. Note: Small children are also able to ride on an adult’s lap if they are facing forward with their legs securely underneath the safety bar.

Luxo Jr. – Pixar Place was also the home of Luxo, Jr., a six-foot audio-animatronic version of Pixar’s desk-lamp mascot. The moving character performs periodic shows throughout the day and evening, across from Toy Story Midway Mania! Due to technical difficulties the attraction was shelved in 2010. Here’s a video in case you never got to see Luxo Jr. in person:

Hey Howdy Hey! Takeaway –  This food cart is based mostly around frozen beverages to enjoy. They also offer quick breakfast items in the morning such as danishes, croissants, granola bars and coffee.

woody and buzz

Woody & Buzz Lightyear have a dedicated (and air-conditioned) meet-and-greet area across from the entrance to Toy Story Midway Mania. Both characters usually appear together and they have set times throughout the day to meet guests. The area is themed to make it look like you’re on Andy’s bed.

Well what did you think? We always have so much fun here. As a matter of fact, I think I need to go back and see if I can get a better score on Toy Story Mania!! See you next time as we head over to our final stop at the Disney Studios, Sunset Boulevard. See you then!
