New Marvel Iron Man Attraction Coming to Hong Kong Disneyland

MarvelIronManExperienceMarvel fans should start saving their pennies for a trip overseas, because Tom Staggs, Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, announced yesterday that the very first Disney attraction based on a Marvel character experience will debut in Hong Kong Disneyland. With the immense popularity of the Iron Man franchise, it should be no surprise that the first attraction based on a Marvel character since Disney acquired Marvel four years ago, will be Marvel’s Iron Man Experience.

Tom Staggs described the new Marvel based attraction on the Disney Parks Blog yesterday:

“Audiences around the world have been captivated by the amazing inventions and innovations of Tony Stark and we’re basing this experience within a piece of the Stark Expo. Located in Tomorrowland at Hong Kong Disneyland, the Expo will allow guests to see firsthand the progression of Tony’s Iron Man suits and many other Stark innovations. Upon entering the ride vehicle our guests will be able to take flight with Iron Man on an epic adventure that no t surprisingly pits Iron Man, and our guests, against the forces of evil. This adventure will take place in the streets and skies of Hong Kong, which will make an even more unique and special experience for our Hong Kong Disneyland guests. In addition, guests will be able to meet and take photos with Iron Man.”

It’s no secret that Marvel’s Iron Man movies have a huge fan base, so why not locate this newest attraction here in the states? Unfortunately, Disney’s contractually prohibited from using any of its Marvel characters inside the parks at the Walt Disney World Resort, since Marvel sold those rights to Universal Orlando long before Disney bought the comic book publisher. And with little room for expansion at California’s Disneyland, Disney turned its attention overseas, choosing Hong Kong Disneyland as the home for the Iron Man Experience.

Disney hopes that the Iron Man Experience will emulate the success of some of the parks other recent expansion projects including, Toy Story Land, Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point – all of which have been huge hits with park guests. With the success of the Iron Man franchise, the addition of this new attraction should ensure the continued growth and success of Hong Kong Disneyland when it debuts in late 2016.
